Biological Wastewater Treatment
FOG

Biological wastewater treatment is an important and integral step of wastewater treatment system. It is often called as Secondary Treatment process which is used to remove any contaminants that are left over after primary treatment. Chemical treatment of waste water makes use of chemicals to react with pollutants present in the wastewater, where as, biological treatment uses microorganisms to degrade wastewater contaminants.

Fatty organic materials from animals, vegetable, and petroleum are not quickly broken down by bacteria. This Fat, Oil, and Grease (FOG) can cause pollution in receiving environments. When large amounts of oils and greases are discharged into receiving waters from community systems they increase Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and they may float to the surface and harden, causing aesthetically unpleasing conditions. In some cases, too much oil and grease can cause septic conditions in ponds and lakes by preventing oxygen from the atmosphere from reaching the water.

Odor Control H2S
Upset Recovery

The odors associated with collection systems and primary treatment facilities are generated as a result of an anaerobic or "septic" condition. This condition occurs when oxygen transfer to the wastewater is limited such as in a force main. Microbes known as "sulfate-reducing bacteria" begin to thrive. These bacteria utilize the sulfate ion (SO4-) that is naturally abundant in most waters as an oxygen source for respiration. The byproduct of this activity is hydrogen sulfide (H2S). This byproduct has a low solubility in the wastewater and a strong, offensive, rotten-egg odor. In addition to its odor, H2S can cause severe corrosion problems as well.

Wastewater treatment processes can become upset due to a variety of situations such as, inhibition/toxicity, temperature stress, significant influent loading variations, power and mechanic failures and human error. A stressed biomass can reduce treatment capacity and system performance increases the chance of effluent non-compliance. For Wastewater Treatment System restarts or startups, our industry and application specific microbial blends provide operators with the flexibility to apply highly concentrated, selected microbes as needed to quickly generate a mature and effective biomass.

Through the use of the BioG on-site microbial technology we have the ability to cost effectively reduce surcharge rates associated with COD, BOD, TSS and FOG.  Reduce or eliminate surcharge fees and fines. Reduce or eliminate effluent toxicity.

The Food and Beverage industries are susceptible to a combination of various BOD – organic substrates such as Fat, Oil and Grease, proteins and carbohydrates. Sanitation chemicals that are inhibitory to bacteria can stress biological wastewater treatment system operations, if needed incorporate an analysis protocol that will confirm the presence and levels of sanitation chemicals and provide a corrective solution.
